After battling years of drought, Condobolin has some truly waterwise gardeners and it is a tribute to them that the town still has many beautiful gardens. Five of these gardens have been selected for the first Australia's Open Garden Scheme to be held in Condobolin, and will be on display over the weekend of the 5th and 6th of April 2008. Three are within the town boundaries and two are a short distance from Condobolin.
Your gardening adventure begins at the Condobolin Showground, where you will discover:
* Program of weekend activities
* Maps and directions to 5 gardens on display
* Food, tea, coffee, meals, etc.
* Nursery supplies
* Markets and stalls
* Ladies special interests - quilting, pottery, crochet and artwork
* Display of waterwise gardening
* Paving and retaining wall supplies
* Soil testing
On Saturday evening you will be entertained by a popular jazz band at one of the open gardens, "The Gums". There will also be wine tasting and nibbles available. Bring a chair along and enjoy the night.
We have some exciting guest speakers organised to attend the event including Michael Bligh, one of Australia's leading landscape designers, who will be talking about design. Also we have Col Lewis talking on waterwise gardening, Maxine Staniforth on caring for your roses, Jock Coupland on soil chemistry and Maree Ravell of Maree's Wholesale Nursery on native trees, shrubs and grafting techniques.
Don't miss the Scarecrow Competition to be held in conjunction with the Condobolin Garden Festival.
$100 will be awarded as first prize in each of the following categories:
1. Comical
2. Traditional
3. Any Character
Sponsor Mr. Paul McLaughlan will purchase any suitable scarecrows for $50 each to be used at his watermelon and pomegranate farm.
